Yes… Let’s continue going through the motions. Just keep our eyes closed till the end.

Open your eyes; we’re not in paradise
How can’t you see, this stress is killing me
Fulfill your dreams, life is not what it seems
We have captured time
so time made us all hostages without mercy

From Epica, Consign To Oblivion

When the pandemic shut down businesses across the planet and gave everybody time to think (and watch a lot of Netflix). We rediscovered things that were lost due to “being busy”. Many of us realized what we did day to day for work was bovine shite. A service job that only lets you exist day to day, month to month with no real future. That’s why we are reading so many stories about businesses having a shortage of labor. But some of these service jobs are soulless and terrible. On a fundamental level, they are a waste of human intelligence.

We are in the middle of a Metacrisis. The world is careening toward uncertainty as the capitalist system reaches the end of planetary limits and we can no longer sustain artificial growth. Maybe AI will shake us loose from this race to the bottom and we’ll get more human-centric in our economic system.

This post was inspired by an EPICA song- Check out the video here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkqyyUTCMUQ

I feel like I’m overcoming being slightly sick all the time. I had my gall bladder removed in the first half of 2022 and it has been a slow recovery. I also suspect that I had some long covid going on as well.

I also feel like my road to recovery has been helped by eating mostly vegetarian with some chicken & fish. I’ve also made it a habit of exercising for 30 minutes a day at least 3 days a week but closer to 5 days a week.

Anyway, I’m alive and feeling pretty good. Working steadily on some great projects and helping all of my clients. Viva la 2023! So far, so good.

The post I’m Alive – Quarter 1 of 2023 first appeared on Glenn Wehmeyer.

But anytime society seems like it’s in trouble it is probably at a point where things are changing. Hopefully, society is changing for the better but that isn’t always a given. We have to push it in toward human progress. I don’t think that people realize that criticizing bad behavior is a very strong tool.

I had a rough start to 2021 but I guess I needed more time to heal.

It feels like spring and life reemerging from hibernation. Except life has been on pause for a whole year. People are finally coming out of their toilet paper forts (literally and figuratively). Some people will sigh and talk about how we are going back to normal. Then they will find that normal was a nice story that no longer holds true. Some of the old patterns are no longer practical. The pandemic and technology are pushing us in different directions now. The pandemic also magnified the unfairness in society and we could see that the United States has been living a fairy tale wrapped in “Freedom!”. You could also see how far we have declined as a nation and we couldn’t have a rational response to a crisis because people’s minds were too feeble to process it.

But we’ve had a change in direction and it’s time to adopt new patterns. Some of these new patterns will be created by technology and like a wave, it will just carry us along. For the technological workers, they found out they didn’t need to waste time commuting to some central building each day. Tech employers also found that productivity was about the same for their organizations when work was carried out remotely. We are no longer factory workers punching time clocks anymore. Much of society has been organized as a factory… from schools to healthcare to office work. That benefits the organization but almost always makes the individual an afterthought when assembling the world.

So I guess what I’m saying is that we have some work to do. Some people seem to think this is a liberal vs conservative problem but that is just about putting something in a box to marginalize it. We need to go back to the first principles of human flourishing and question the structures that prevent that flourishing. There are a lot of bad ideas that have been perpetuated for over a hundred years. Let the 2020’s be the spring cleaning of those bad ideas and to introduce better ideas. I’m tired of the future being held back by shitty dogmas.

#RethinkingHumanity

To say that the year 2020 has been challenging is like saying that Jeff Bezos has some money. Some parts of the United States are still literally on fire!

It’s also no joke that Covid-19 is raging again thanks to people going indoors and ignoring precautions. We are safe but locked down here in Washington. We also have a few Covid-19 vaccines on the horizon so that should make for a less scary 2021. I don’t personally expect to receive the vaccine for a few months but just glad we’ll have it available.

I’m mostly creating this blog post as a checkpoint on the year 2020. Also by the time I’m completing this we’ve had the elections and we have a new president elect – Joe Biden. Now Donald Trump will start fading into obscurity but I’m sure he’ll make some noise for a few months. I’ll be actively avoiding most news and specifically politics for most of 2021. I had plenty in the past 4 years.

My hope is that 2021 is going to be amazing and we’ll be able to focus on really important things in life. The past year has felt like we were in some sort of societal coma. My personal focus of technology kept moving in 2020 and lots of great things on the horizon. But I’ll probably write about those in a separate post.

It’s December 2020 and year is coming to close. Everybody continue to stay safe and let’s take 2021 by the horns.

Beware the Ides of March.. or in this case Covid-19 of March. I live in the epicenter of coronavirus in the United States. I think Seattle is not doing too badly. The supermarkets run out of all the usual suspects like hand sanitizer, toilet paper, and other cleaning products. The basic foodstuffs are getting restocked every day. So I’m not really worried about running out of supplies. I’ve got plenty of chicken and soup to last me a while 😉

I’m a very calm person and not known to overreact to pretty much anything. But I have to admit that on Monday the 18th things kinda got to me. Everything closing down, borders shut and everybody staying home. Of course, being in the US state with 900 plus (aka the most) cases of Coronavirus is a bit unnerving.

I’m Generation X. I think we have the most preppers out of any generation. As Warren Ellis said recently, “We all assumed this was coming, and we’ve all been ready for decades to cut you for clean water”. The GenXer’s are prepared for this crisis… We came home to empty houses, watched TV alone for hours and made ourselves food.

Still… Strange Days indeed!

I’ve got plenty of streaming services to watch, some books to read and I setup my life to work from home years ago. I’m just looking out for everybody around me and monitoring the situation. As the words of immortal wisdom say, “Don’t Panic!”

I started 2019 unsure how things were going and the death of my father was a plot twist that none of us are really prepared for. But looking back it wasn’t a bad year personally and it seemed to fly by at a good clip.

It also was a year where I looked back and examined the road behind me. I feel like I made my own unique path and it was completely guided by technology. In 2016, I left a job that I had been at for 6 years. In the technology sector being at a job more than 2 years is quite unusual. Most techies are trying to rack up companies on their resume and that’s ok. Guess that’s just not my style. I’ve run across too many people who have burned the candles at both ends and are a shell of their former selves. I’ve also figured out that I’m a “Jack of all Trades and Master of Some”. I can pretty much tackle any problem in technology with enough research and in some areas, I can really master something in a short period of time. It also keeps me from getting bored.

After over 20 years of working at technology companies, I needed to strike out on my own. Fortunately, the technology platforms for freelancing has come a long way. Sites like freelancer.com and Upwork have been amazing. The variety of jobs on offer is so enticing. It made the choice to become self-employed pretty easy.

Anyway, I think I’m done rambling. 2019 was pretty good and I can’t wait for 2020.

The post Looking back at 2019, been a ride first appeared on Glenn Wehmeyer.
